Venice: where to stay and how you arrive
Where to base yourself in Venice — the historic centre or Mestre on the mainland — and how your arrival point shapes the first and last day of the trip.
For a traveller, Venice is two places: the car-free historic centre on its islands in the lagoon, and Mestre on the mainland, joined to it by the Ponte della Libertà. Where you sleep and where you arrive decide how your days start and end, long before you choose what to see.
The historic centre or the mainland
Staying in the historic centre puts most sights within walking distance, and the evenings are yours once the day visitors leave. There are no cars there: you arrive at Piazzale Roma by road or at Santa Lucia station by train, and every step after that is on foot or by water bus.
Staying in Mestre, on the mainland, means every day in the centre begins and ends with the crossing — by train to Santa Lucia or by bus to Piazzale Roma. Travellers choose it for its prices, or because it is easier to reach by car or train; the trade-off is time and energy every day.
How you arrive
Most visitors come through one of these points, and each changes how much of the first day is left:
- Venice Marco Polo Airport, on the mainland north of Mestre
- Treviso Airport, further from the lagoon, near Treviso
- Venezia Santa Lucia station, at the edge of the historic centre
- Venezia Mestre station, on the mainland
- Piazzale Roma, where the roads into the historic centre end
A late arrival at an airport is not the same as an arrival at Santa Lucia: the transfer comes first, and a plan should start only once you have reached where you sleep.
Walking in Venice
The historic centre is explored on foot, and many of its bridges have steps. If long days of walking are hard for you, set a daily limit and spend more of the day on the water bus or in one area.
